Stroke Resources
Finding useful information after a stroke can sometimes feel like another job in itself. This section brings together practical SHF resources, trusted organisations, common questions and useful explanations to help stroke survivors and the people supporting them find what they need.
A place to find the right information
After my stroke, I wanted answers.
I wanted to understand what had happened, why it had happened, whether I could exercise again and what life might look like from that point onwards.
Over time there were more questions — about PFO, medication, exercise, atrial fibrillation, fitness and long-term health.
Stroke Health Fitness doesn't try to replace doctors, therapists, charities or specialist stroke organisations. Instead, I want this Resources section to make it easier to find useful information and know where to go when something falls outside SHF's scope.
Start with the question that matters to you today and build from there.

LISTENSometimes SHF isn't the place you need
That's important to say.
There are questions that should be answered by your stroke team, GP, physiotherapist, pharmacist or another appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
There are also excellent stroke charities and official organisations providing specialist information, support and services.
The aim of our Useful Organisations section is to point you towards those resources rather than pretending Stroke Health Fitness can provide everything.

EXERCISESupporting somebody?

SUPPORTLived experience has a place here too
Clinical information is essential, but sometimes you also want to hear from somebody who has actually experienced some of the things you're searching for.
My own journey includes having a stroke at 44, going through investigations to find the cause, discovering a PFO, having it closed and subsequently dealing with atrial fibrillation and flutter.
I've also experienced the uncertainty of returning to exercise and gradually adapting the way I train.
That's why SHF combines reliable information with lived experience — while being clear about the difference between the two.

LATEST ARTICLESInformation should support — not replace — healthcare
Stroke Health Fitness provides general information, lived experience and fitness-related education.
It does not provide medical diagnosis or replace individual medical, rehabilitation or healthcare advice.
Stroke affects everybody differently, so information that is relevant to one survivor may not be appropriate for another.
