IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Medical & Fitness Disclaimer

Stroke Health Fitness provides educational information, lived experience and general fitness guidance for people affected by stroke. It does not replace individual medical, rehabilitation or healthcare advice.

What Stroke Health Fitness is

Stroke Health Fitness exists to provide information, encouragement and practical guidance around exercise, fitness, recovery, nutrition and life after stroke.

The website also includes personal accounts of my own experience of stroke, PFO closure, atrial fibrillation/flutter, exercise and recovery.

My experience is exactly that — my experience.
It should not be assumed that another stroke survivor will have the same symptoms, recovery, medical history, exercise tolerance or outcome.

This website does not provide medical advice

Information on Stroke Health Fitness is provided for general educational and informational purposes.

It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition, and it should not be used as a substitute for advice from your doctor, stroke team, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, dietitian, pharmacist or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking medical care because of something you have read on this website.

Fitness qualifications and professional boundaries

Neil Bumford is a qualified personal trainer and a stroke survivor.

He is not presenting himself through Stroke Health Fitness as a doctor, physiotherapist, stroke consultant or other regulated medical professional.

General exercise and fitness information on this site should therefore be understood within those boundaries.

Personal training and medical rehabilitation are not the same thing.
Some stroke survivors may require clinical assessment, rehabilitation or specialist exercise guidance before progressing to more general fitness activity.

Exercise after stroke

Stroke affects people very differently. The type, severity and location of a stroke can influence mobility, balance, strength, coordination, fatigue, cognition, communication and other aspects of function.

Other medical conditions — including heart conditions, blood pressure problems and medication use — can also influence what exercise is appropriate.

Before starting, restarting or significantly changing an exercise programme after stroke, obtain appropriate professional advice where your circumstances require it.

Do not copy another person's exercise programme simply because they have also had a stroke. Your abilities, risks and rehabilitation needs may be completely different.

Personal stories are not recommendations

Stroke Health Fitness contains detailed descriptions of my own journey, including:

  • returning to walking and exercise after stroke
  • running after medical clearance
  • strength and resistance training
  • my PFO investigations and closure
  • atrial fibrillation and flutter
  • my use of prescribed medication
  • changes I personally made to my diet and lifestyle

These accounts are included to share lived experience and should not be interpreted as instructions for another person to follow the same path.

Medication

The website may mention medications that I have personally taken or that are commonly discussed in stroke and cardiovascular care.

This does not constitute a recommendation to start, stop or change any medication.

Never stop or alter prescribed medication on the basis of information on Stroke Health Fitness. Speak with your doctor, pharmacist or other prescribing healthcare professional.

Nutrition and supplements

Nutrition content on Stroke Health Fitness provides general healthy-eating information and discussion of my own experience.

Individual nutritional requirements may differ because of medical conditions, medication, swallowing difficulties, allergies, weight changes or other factors.

Supplements may interact with medication or be unsuitable for some people. Seek appropriate professional advice where necessary.

Stroke Health Fitness is not an emergency service

Do not use this website, email, social media or any future SHF messaging or coaching service to obtain help during a medical emergency.

If you think you or somebody else may be having a stroke, call 999 immediately. Stroke symptoms can include sudden facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, as well as other sudden neurological symptoms.

Symptoms during exercise

Exercise should not be treated as something to push through regardless of symptoms.

Stop exercising and seek appropriate medical help if you experience concerning or unusual symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, sudden neurological symptoms or any other symptom that makes you think you may be seriously unwell.

Where urgent medical attention may be needed, use the appropriate emergency healthcare service rather than contacting Stroke Health Fitness.

No guarantee of results

Recovery and fitness outcomes vary enormously.

No exercise programme, coaching service, article, assessment or other Stroke Health Fitness resource can guarantee that somebody will regain a particular level of mobility, strength, fitness, independence or health.

Any examples of my own recovery or another individual's progress should not be interpreted as a promise that somebody else will achieve the same result.

Future personalised SHF services

Stroke Health Fitness may develop assessments, personalised fitness pathways, coaching, digital tools or other services.

Where such services are offered, their scope and limitations will be explained clearly.

A digital assessment or fitness pathway cannot replace an individual clinical examination where one is required.

External information and links

Stroke Health Fitness may link to external websites, research, charities, healthcare organisations, products or other resources.

A link is provided for convenience or further information and does not necessarily mean that Stroke Health Fitness endorses every statement, service or product provided by that organisation.

Your individual circumstances matter

Stroke recovery is highly individual.

You are responsible for deciding, together with the appropriate healthcare professionals where necessary, whether particular information, exercises, activities or lifestyle changes are suitable for your own circumstances.

Use Stroke Health Fitness to inform questions, build confidence and explore possibilities — not to replace your healthcare team.

Keeping information up to date

We aim to provide useful and responsible information, but medical and rehabilitation guidance can change over time.

Content may therefore be reviewed, corrected or updated as new evidence and guidance becomes available.

STROKE HEALTH FITNESS

Use SHF alongside — not instead of — professional healthcare

Stroke Health Fitness is about helping people explore what may still be possible after stroke. Good information, lived experience and fitness support can be valuable, but they must sit within appropriate medical and rehabilitation boundaries.
