Life after stroke. Moving forward.
Stroke Health Fitness is being built for the part of the stroke journey that can continue long after hospital treatment and formal rehabilitation.
It's a place to explore recovery, exercise, fatigue, confidence, healthy living, independence, work, family support and the many questions that can arise while rebuilding life after stroke.
Our aim is simple: to help stroke survivors and the people around them find useful information, support and possible next steps.

Stroke doesn't simply end when you leave hospital
The immediate stages after stroke can involve hospital treatment, investigations, rehabilitation and support from healthcare professionals.
But the questions don't necessarily stop when that period ends.
People may still be dealing with fatigue, reduced confidence, changes to work, uncertainty about exercise, emotional challenges, relationships or becoming more independent again.
Others may be doing relatively well physically but still find themselves wondering:
Stroke affects people — and the people around them
Stroke Health Fitness is primarily designed for stroke survivors, but stroke rarely affects one person in isolation.
Stroke Survivors
Whether your stroke was recent or happened years ago, SHF explores the practical questions that can arise while recovering, adapting and moving forward.
Partners, Families & Carers
Supporting somebody after stroke can bring its own questions, responsibilities and emotional challenges.
EXPLORE SUPPORTPeople Further Along
SHF isn't only about the first few weeks or months. Long-term recovery, fitness, health, confidence and finding new opportunities matter too.
Life after stroke is bigger than one subject
That's why Stroke Health Fitness is being developed around several connected areas rather than one narrow definition of recovery.
Recovery After Stroke
Fatigue, confidence, independence, emotional recovery, work, long-term recovery and finding new opportunities.
EXPLORE RECOVERYExercise After Stroke
Walking, gym training, strength, home exercise, mobility and returning to an active lifestyle where appropriate.
EXPLORE EXERCISENutrition & Healthy Living
Practical information around healthy eating, activity, weight, hydration and other aspects of looking after your long-term health.
EXPLORE NUTRITIONSupport After Stroke
Information for partners, spouses, families, friends and carers as they navigate life alongside somebody who has experienced stroke.
EXPLORE SUPPORTCreated from lived experience
Stroke Health Fitness was founded by Neil after his own experience of having an ischaemic stroke at 44.
What followed included hospital treatment, investigations, cardiac monitoring, returning to exercise and years of adapting to life after stroke.
Neil later qualified as a Level 3 Personal Trainer and developed a particular interest in fitness, healthy living and the longer-term questions people can face after stroke.
SHF grew from a desire to share that experience while creating something broader and more useful than one person's story.
ABOUT NEIL MY STROKE JOURNEYSHF doesn't replace professional stroke care
Stroke Health Fitness is not a substitute for doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists or other healthcare and rehabilitation professionals.
We provide general information, lived experience and fitness-related education, alongside links and signposting to appropriate trusted resources.
Individual strokes, health conditions and recovery journeys can be very different. Decisions about your own treatment, rehabilitation and medical care should be made with appropriately qualified professionals.
MEDICAL & FITNESS DISCLAIMERHelping people find the right support
There are already excellent organisations, healthcare services, charities, professionals and specialist resources supporting people affected by stroke.
SHF doesn't need to recreate all of them.
Part of our role is helping people discover useful information and, where appropriate, pointing them towards trusted specialist support.
As SHF develops, we want to build relationships with organisations, professionals and other services that can contribute to better support for people living after stroke.
The principle is simple
If somebody else is better placed to provide specialist help, SHF should help people find that help rather than pretending to provide everything itself.
Making support more personal
As Stroke Health Fitness grows, simply adding more pages isn't enough.
Somebody dealing with fatigue after returning to work may need a very different route through SHF from somebody trying to begin exercising again or a partner supporting a newly discharged stroke survivor.
That's why we're developing better ways for people to start with their own circumstances rather than having to search through the entire site.
START HEREAsk SHF — in development
We're exploring how responsible AI-assisted navigation could help people ask questions in ordinary language and find information relevant to their circumstances, challenges and goals.
The aim isn't to create an AI doctor.
It's to make useful information and appropriate signposting easier to navigate and more personal.
Technology isn't the whole answer
Sometimes people want information.
Sometimes they want to hear from somebody who has been through something similar.
SHF will continue to explore ways of combining useful digital information with lived experience and genuine human conversation.
That includes the developing Talk to Neil service, which is intended to provide an optional conversation centred on lived experience, confidence and navigating life after stroke — within clear professional boundaries.
CONTACT SHFWhat we want SHF to stand for
Useful
Information should help somebody understand something, discover an option or identify a sensible next step.
Realistic
Stroke recovery can be difficult and unpredictable. SHF shouldn't promise miraculous recoveries or pretend every journey is positive.
Hopeful
Realism doesn't mean giving up on progress, confidence, new goals or building a fulfilling life after stroke.
Responsible
We should always recognise the boundaries between lived experience, general fitness information and professional medical or rehabilitation advice.
Personal
Different people face different challenges. SHF should increasingly help people find what is relevant to them.
Always Developing
SHF will continue to improve through learning, research, professional input, partnerships and listening to stroke survivors and families.
